Soap Operas Down But Not Out
February 5th, 2007 by Sarthak KIn today's age of reality television, there have been many predictions about the death of the soap opera as a medium of entertainment. However, these predictions have fallen flat, just as those which predicted the demise of the newspaper with the onslaught of broadcast media had done, or just like the onslaught of digital filmmaking had people gunning for celluloid.
And while there have been quite a few websites devoted to film reviews, we rarely have quality sites that discuss or review soap operas. One rare quality site which I discovered recently that is solely dedicated to soap operas is soaps.com. Here you will find daily updates, star interviews, news articles, lively message boards and other stuff related to soap operas.
While the content part of the site is excellent, the same cannot be said of its layout and design. I especially dislike the pinkish hue throughout the middle of the homepage, it makes the site look more of a women's fashion magazine. A bluish or brownish hue might look better. The content and ad placement is quite good, but the page layout could be better optimized. I browse on Mozilla Firefox at 1024x768 resolution (which is the standard these days), and yet, there is a horizontal scrollbar appearing on the bottom of the site which when dragged towards the right reveals a large empty area. I tried opening in IE but ended with the same result. The page needs a bit of horizontal compression. Lastly, I also think that site visitors should be allowed to vote in the polls without having to register on it, unlike the case currently.
On the whole its the content that really matters, and this site gets top marks for that as good content is rightly matched with pictures and interactive polls.
