There are many film schools to choose from today. University programs cost $30,000 or more, per year just for tuition. So a four year undergraduate degree in Film at that rate would cost $120,000 for tuition and probably another $40,000-$50,000 for living expenses. The grand total could easily be $160,000 or more!

In most cases, each student must finance their own final film project while in school. For example, if a senior film is required to graduate that can cost another $10,000-$20,000. At NYU, and other private film schools these costs can add up to a large student loan debt. Some budgets blossom to $100,000 or more (even if their not supposed to).

The average NYU film school student graduate $65,000 in debt.

Sam Raimi, the director who I worked with on Army of Darkness, who went on to direct the Spiderman trilogy, got his start by making an 8mm short film with his friends called Within the Woods in 1978. He used his short to get the funding for his first feature, The Evil Dead. He made movies with the means he had available, and was creative about his decisions to find funding.
